Cross-hatching is a drawing technique first used in the middle ages. It is well-known due to works by artists such as Albrecht Dürer, Rembrandt, and even Leonardo da Vinci among others. In the 1800’s Van Gogh even used cross hatching to add texture to his backgrounds with fine brush lines in color. Early in my career as an illustrator I began using a radiograph pen on illustration board and have loved making lines ever since. The image on the bottom left is a close up detail of the chipmunks eye showing how the line work was used to create this art. The illustrations in the book are all done with color cross hatch lines. done in this way. |
