Joe grew up next to Sourdough Creek where it wanders into Bozeman Montana. That proximity to nature left an indelible mark on his artistic soul. After earning his degree in art from Montana State University and graduate studies at the University of Montana, Joe pursued graphic design & illustration. Developing his illustration technique became his primary focus and led to a long career as a freelance illustrator working for major publishing houses around the US specializing in art for children. Drawing and sculpting have always been a part of Joe’s creative life. His fine art has been featured in national juried shows and exhibitions across the country, including the prestigious National Sculpture Society’s Annual Exhibition. Joe and his wife, a fellow artist, enjoy family, friends, and their life together while continuing to create art from their Blue Mountain studio
Critters like this owl are the whimsical side of my sculpture. After 40 years illustrating children's books it seemed natural to take my love of "animals with attitude" and bring them alive in a three dimensional medium. I call these sculptures "Critters with Comments.. You can enjoy a short video of these "comments" by clicking the button below.
This illustration lives in my new book... "The Perfect Place"
